It is white crystalline powder.
Odorless, but with a strong alkali smell
Density 2.428g/cm3.
Melting point 891℃.
Decomposition at boiling point.
Relative molecular weight 138.21.
Soluble in water, the aqueous solution is alkaline. Insoluble in ethanol, acetone and ether.
Strong hygroscopic, if exposed to the air it can absorb carbon dioxide and water and form into potassium bicarbonate. So it should be sealed packaging.
Hydrate consists of monohydrate, dihydrate and trihydrate.
Main Uses
1. Used in the production of optical glass, it can improve the transparency, strength and refractive coefficient of glass.
2. As desiccant in chemical experiments. However, it cannot be used as a desiccant for acids, phenols or other acidic substances
3. It is used in the manufacture of kinescope glass in the electronics industry, in the decarbonization production of of fertilizer, and in the manufacture of potassium salt.
4. Used as leavening agent in food. As alkaline agent and dough improver, and can inhibit noodles sourness.
