Monopotassium Phosphate (Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate, MKP)

Also known as potassium phosphate monobasic, MKP is a potassium phosphate. In the food industry, it is used as a pH regulator, food additive, and wastewater treatment agent. In agriculture, monopotassium phosphate is a fully water-soluble, quick-acting fertilizer providing phosphorus and potassium without chloride or sulfate ions, mainly applied in nutrient solution cultivation and foliar spraying.

Pure Monopotassium Phosphate (KH₂PO₄) is a colorless and odorless tetragonal crystal. It contains 52.2% phosphorus (as P₂O₅) and 34.5% potassium (as K₂O). It is highly soluble in water, with solubility closely related to temperature-the higher the water temperature, the greater the solubility. At 25°C, the solubility is 22 g/100 mL. The aqueous solution has a pH of 4.4–4.6, exhibiting weak acidity. It is highly hygroscopic and may cake upon moisture absorption. The melting point is 252.6°C, and it decomposes above 400°C. At room temperature, it has low chemical reactivity, is relatively stable, and does not easily undergo chemical reactions.

Monopotassium phosphate (MKP) is a fully water-soluble fertilizer with high solubility. After application, it quickly dissolves in the soil solution, releasing phosphate and potassium ions for crop absorption, making it a quick-acting fertilizer providing both phosphorus and potassium nutrients. Potassium ions, being cations, are easily adsorbed by soil colloids and are not easily lost. In contrast, phosphate ions can readily react with active iron and aluminum ions in the soil to form insoluble phosphate compounds, reducing fertilizer effectiveness. Moreover, as one of the most expensive phosphate fertilizers, its cost-effectiveness is not optimal if applied directly as a basal or topdressing fertilizer in dryland or paddy fields. Therefore, its main use is as a fertilizer for nutrient solution cultivation.

Additionally, both phosphate and potassium ions can be directly absorbed by crop leaf cells, providing rapid and effective nutrition. As a result, MKP is widely used as a foliar fertilizer. It is particularly beneficial when crops experience stress, such as waterlogging, which impairs root absorption, requiring timely nutrient supplementation to restore growth. It is also effective in the late growth stage to enhance crop quality, where foliar spraying with a water-soluble mixture of MKP and urea can achieve excellent results.
